for Historic Barn

DMP successfully secure planning and listed building consent for works to existing agricultural barn near Hever Castle.

The application site relates to a barn to the North East of a Grade II Listed Building Medieval Farmhouse and various ancillary buildings.

Our client was seeking consent for the significant repairs and refurbishment of the large traditional threshing barn as it was in poor state of repair.

It is proposed to retain and reinstate the existing 3-bay agricultural barn in order to maintain its use and secure its longevity.

During the detailed survey by Heritage Consultant, it was established the barn dates back to mid 17th century with further additions on the 18th century and more modern repairs and alterations during the 19th century. Surviving historic fabric includes elements of the timber frame, a threshing floor, some weather boarding and historic features.

Through careful design and consideration by DMP’s in house experience Architectural Technicians, detailed drawings and supporting information was submitted in order the proposed works preserved the historic fabric and character and sometimes reveal the historic significance of the building though alteration.

Works will involve:

  • Stripping off of corrugated tin roofing sheet and replacement with reclaimed traditional clay peg tiles.
  • Refurbishment of existing windows and insertion of new glazing.
  • Repairs to oak posts and insertion of full height glazed doors to Midstrey.
  • Removal of inappropriate modern cladding and use of horizontal weather boarding.
  • Remove concrete post and replace with oak posts including lime mortar pointing.
  • New limecrete floor and reinstatement of threshing floor.
  • Timber repairs throughout including mezzanine and new timber access stairs.

DMP are currently negotiating with the clients retained main contractor in order works can commence in Spring 2024.  Importantly, bring back to life the barn in order for its beauty and character to be identified through all its timbers.
