Summer Roof Replacement Progress

Works are progressing well on site at Kent College, Canterbury, where DMP is acting as both Principal Designer and Contract Administrator for the replacement of the Art Block roof.

The project involves the safe removal and disposal of the existing asbestos cement slates, associated asbestos-containing materials, rooflights, fascias, soffits and rainwater goods. These are being replaced with a modern, high-performance roofing system that will significantly improve the building’s durability, weather protection and long-term maintenance while providing a safer environment for staff and students.

A key feature of the refurbishment is the installation of new solar-powered Velux rooflights complete with remote-controlled blinds. These will provide greater control over natural daylight within the classrooms, reducing glare and creating a more comfortable teaching environment. Given the building’s location adjacent to the sports courts, the rooflights are also being fitted with laminated safety glazing to provide enhanced impact resistance against stray footballs and other sports equipment.

Over the past two weeks, excellent progress has been made. The asbestos roof coverings have been successfully removed, and the new breathable roofing membrane and timber battens are now being installed in readiness for the new roof finish. Internal restoration works are also being programmed to ensure the classrooms are fully reinstated following the roof replacement.

With close collaboration between DMP Building Surveyors, Abbott Construction, specialist subcontractors and the Kent College team, the project remains on programme. Careful planning, proactive contract administration and regular communication are helping to ensure the works are completed in time for the start of the new academic year, allowing students and staff to return to upgraded, safer and more resilient facilities.
