DMP were proudly appointed by a new commercial client to transform The Forge—a unique historic building in the heart of Tunbridge Wells—into a contemporary and functional office space.
The brief? A full internal refurbishment of the existing structure, alongside a new connection to the adjoining property, all while respecting the heritage and character of this much-loved building.
Originally built in the late 18th or early 19th century, The Forge was once a wheelwright’s workshop before becoming a thriving blacksmith’s forge—a cornerstone of the Mount Sion community. The area’s organic, phased development has resulted in a distinctive blend of architectural styles and building periods, offering both charm and complexity to any refurbishment.
This mix of old and new made it the perfect opportunity for DMP to demonstrate our expertise in heritage-sensitive commercial development.

Our surveyors began by sitting down with the client to truly understand their vision: a workspace that combines modern functionality with architectural integrity. From this, we produced a tailored scope of works and project timeline.

- Detailed measured survey of the building, including roof structure, elevations, and site levels.
- Comprehensive drawing package featuring floor plans, elevations, and sectional drawings to capture the property’s character and structural relationship with neighbouring buildings.
- Multiple design proposals allowing the client to explore creative, practical layouts before finalising the scheme.
The final design blended spacious open-plan offices with quieter, more intimate workspaces—supported by all the essential facilities expected in today’s commercial environments.
Planning & Compliance: Streamlined for Success
DMP submitted a successful planning application to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. This included:
- Redesigned dormer windows and new rooflights
- Extension of the adjoining building
- External staircase for first-floor egress
- Full replacement of external joinery
- Internal reconfiguration at ground and first floors
Throughout the process, DMP worked closely with the Council’s Planning Officer, ensuring swift resolution of any queries or amendments. We kept our client fully informed every step of the way.
Construction & Project Delivery: End-to-End Expertise
Following planning approval, we prepared a full Building Regulations and construction drawing package, including structural elements. These formed the basis for:
- Competitive tendering with trusted local contractors
- Contract administration under a JCT Intermediate Works Contract
- Ongoing site inspections and quality assurance
